Shooting Incident or Other Violence

Active Shooter Preparedness

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. These situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Knowing what to do can save lives.

RUN, HIDE, FIGHT

Run (Evacuate if Safe to Do So)

  • Leave the area immediately if a safe path is available.
  • Take others with you if possible, but do not delay your own escape.
  • Leave personal belongings behind.
  • Prevent others from entering the danger area if you can do so safely.
  • Keep your hands visible.
  • Call 911 when you are in a safe location.

Hide (If You Cannot Evacuate)

  • Go to the nearest room or area out of the attacker’s view.
  • Lock and barricade doors with heavy furniture or other objects.
  • Silence your phone and other devices.
  • Turn off lights and remain quiet.
  • Stay low, spread out if possible, and remain out of sight.

Fight (Last Resort)

  • Take action only if your life is in immediate danger.
  • Work with others if possible.
  • Use available objects to distract or incapacitate the attacker.
  • Commit fully to your actions.

When Law Enforcement Arrives

  • Remain calm and follow all instructions immediately.
  • Keep your hands empty and visible.
  • Avoid sudden movements.
  • Do not run toward officers or stop them for assistance.
  • Move in the direction officers tell you to go.

After the Incident

  • Move to a secure location.
  • Follow instructions from emergency responders and university officials.
  • Be prepared to provide any information you know about the incident.
  • Seek support services if needed.

Be Prepared Before an Emergency

  • Know building exits and evacuation routes.
  • Identify rooms that can be secured if sheltering is necessary.
  • Participate in campus drills and preparedness training.
  • Report suspicious behavior or safety concerns to authorities.
  • Review your building’s emergency procedures.
